Queensland D&C Contractor Tops AFR Fast Starters

The annual Australian Financial Review’s Fast Starters has been released and Queensland D&C contractor, Niclin Group topped the list.

Nick and Caroline Cave established Niclin Group five years ago with the clear goal of creating a construction company that valued its employees and had a great culture.  Since then the company has grown to be one of Queensland’s favourite industrial and commercial construction companies with projects all over the state.

The list, compiled and published annually by the Australian Financial Review, was dominated this year by business services. Entrants to Fast Starters must have commenced trading on or after July 1, 2014, and provide at least two years of turnover data, with a minimum of $500,000 in the second-most-recent reporting period (2016-2017).

When asked what has fueled Niclin Group’s success, Founder and Managing Director, Nick Cave credits the hard work of his champion team and the company’s clearly articulated company vision, mission and values.

“We have focused on creating a champion team and culture.  I know that if we take care of our people it starts a loyalty loop and they will in turn take care of our clients and contractors.”

While it may appear that the company has had overnight success, the impressive Fast 100 result belies the hard work behind the scenes.

“Over the past eighteen months we have worked hard to build a team that isn’t just the best at what they do, they are the best fit for our team.

We’ve really focused on embedding our culture and supporting our team through a strong learning and development program.

The success of this approach is evident, we have recently won a couple of really exciting projects, including the redevelopment of Enoggera Bowls Club on Pickering Street.”

Finding the right niche for the company has also taken time and a lot of hard work.

“When Niclin Group was established, the company undertook a number of residential projects.  From our own project in Manly, to apartments and townhouses in Corinda and Bridgeman Downs, we were primarily working on residential projects.

However, this isn’t where our passion lies.  We discovered that industrial developments, fuel stations and mixed-use commercial is where our real value lies.”

This formula of the right team and correct industry focus has translated to success.  Over the past 12 months, the small team has completed seven warehouses and a further seven service stations across Queensland.

When asked what 2019 holds for Niclin Group, Nick is quick to reply, “Our focus will continue to be on building our champion team and I look forward to seeing how we continue to work together to achieve our vision.”
